Summary

A female apothecary secretly dispenses poisons to liberate women from the men who have wronged them—setting three lives across centuries on a dangerous collision course。

Rule #1: The poison must never be used to harm another woman。

Rule #2: The names of the murderer and her victim must be recorded in the apothecary’s register。

One cold February evening in 1791, at the back of a dark London alley in a hidden apothecary shop, Nella awaits her newest customer。 Once a respected healer, Nella now uses her knowledge for a darker purpose—selling well-disguised poisons to desperate women who would kill to be free of the men in their lives。 But when her new patron turns out to be a precocious twelve-year-old named Eliza Fanning, an unexpected friendship sets in motion a string of events that jeopardizes Nella’s world and threatens to expose the many women whose names are written in her register。

In present-day London, aspiring historian Caroline Parcewell spends her tenth wedding anniversary alone, reeling from the discovery of her husband’s infidelity。 When she finds an old apothecary vial near the river Thames, she can’t resist investigating, only to realize she’s found a link to the unsolved “apothecary murders” that haunted London over two centuries ago。 As she deepens her search, Caroline’s life collides with Nella’s and Eliza’s in a stunning twist of fate—and not everyone will survive。

4。5 stars I just loved this debut。 Really well done with dual timelines that worked & intertwined。 Love that it centered on finding one’s own happiness and purpose。 Carve out time & buckle up it’s a great ride!

I would give it 5 stars but it was a bit of a slow read for me。 I’d highly recommend making the recipes on the last few pages to accompany the read。 A really unique story。

I enjoyed this jaunt through London in the 1790's。 The dual timelines were a fun addition, bringing the past story and the current day story together。 I enjoyed this jaunt through London in the 1790's。 The dual timelines were a fun addition, bringing the past story and the current day story together。 。。。more

This book was extremely repetitive (how many times are we going to be reminded that the 2 main characters want babies??) and it was long。 I figured out the twist about 1/2 way through the book。 One thing I did like is that the modern main character was strong enough to walk away from the bullshit in her life。 In my opinion, the situation in the book could have been avoided if someone bothered to explain menstruation to the young girl。 That is a big hole in the book。

I finished this book less than 24 hours after I started it! It captured me from the very beginning and I did not want to put it down。 The Lost Apothecary follows the story of three strong females, each facing their own issues。 The different POVs are woven together seamlessly and the story is easy to follow。 This is definitely going to be one of my favorites this year!

“If there was anything that the last few days had taught me, it was the importance of shining new light on old truths hidden in dark places。” Ready to celebrate her 10th anniversary with her husband James, Caroline excitedly plans an itinerary packed with sight-seeing in one of her favorite places: London。 However, on the eve of their flight, a chance discovery proves that there are hidden secrets in their marriage that send Caroline to London alone on her anniversary trip。 While trying to re-cr “If there was anything that the last few days had taught me, it was the importance of shining new light on old truths hidden in dark places。” Ready to celebrate her 10th anniversary with her husband James, Caroline excitedly plans an itinerary packed with sight-seeing in one of her favorite places: London。 However, on the eve of their flight, a chance discovery proves that there are hidden secrets in their marriage that send Caroline to London alone on her anniversary trip。 While trying to re-create an itinerary for one, she stumbles upon an opportunity to dabble in her passion: history。 Her discovery is something that will, as cliche as it sounds, change the course of her life as she knows it。 In an alternating timeline, Nella, an apothecary in 18th century London, shares her story of carrying on her mother’s apothecary shop, while extending her services from simply health medicines。 Nella learns the art of poison, but she has very specific rules she will not break for creating and selling her mixtures。 Nella meets Eliza, a 12 year old girl, and their chance meeting begins a journey neither of them would ever anticipate。 Oh this story。 It was so wonderful。 It was soul-searching mixed with historical fiction mixed with a dash of fantasy。 (Disclaimer—I would not ever have categorized this as fantasy。 I would have labeled this historical fiction。) Both Nella and Caroline represent strong female characters—even if our strength is sometimes dormant waiting for us to allow it to show。 I cannot recommend this one enough。 It was a fabulous jaunt through 18th century and modern day London, one of my favorite settings! Most importantly, we are left with a powerful reminder of how we are, truly, in charge of our own destinies。 Sometimes we just need a little bravery—and maybe even a dash of madness。 “What I’d done was brave—even a bit mad—but it was authentic and true to the real me。” 。。。more

"But the possibility of the apothecary's existence, the mystery of it, drew me deeper。" The Lost Apothecary is an enthralling and bewitching story of women, self-discovery and the secrets hidden in the shadows。 In dual timelines we follow the stories of three women: Nella, Eliza and Caroline。 The story opens in London in 1791。 Nella runs the apothecary shop that once belonged to her mother。 But this apothecary isn’t just a place of healing, it is also a place for women who seek something much da "But the possibility of the apothecary's existence, the mystery of it, drew me deeper。" The Lost Apothecary is an enthralling and bewitching story of women, self-discovery and the secrets hidden in the shadows。 In dual timelines we follow the stories of three women: Nella, Eliza and Caroline。 The story opens in London in 1791。 Nella runs the apothecary shop that once belonged to her mother。 But this apothecary isn’t just a place of healing, it is also a place for women who seek something much darker: vengeance and murder。 Twelve-year-old Eliza has been sent to the apothecary by her mistress。 When Eliza begs for refuge, Nessa reluctantly allows her to stay in the hidden shelter of the apothecary and even begins to teach her some of her secrets。 But when a mysterious woman makes a request that goes against everything Nessa stands for, it sparks a chain of events that will threaten everything she has; including her life。In present day London Caroline is on what should have been her 10th anniversary trip alone after discovering her husband's betrayal。 When she finds a small vial while mudlarking she becomes fascinated by the item and determined to learn the item’s history and comes across a clue connecting the vial to a string of unsolved murders over two hundred years ago。Past and present collide in this mesmerising tale creating a heady mix of mystery, contemporary and historical fiction that sizzles with suspense。 It was a combination I found irresistible and I devoured the book quickly。 Deftly written, evocative and clearly well researched, the author spirited me away to the dank, filthy streets of 18th century London where the apothecary is all smoke and mirrors; invisible to the untrained eye but visible for those in need。 Shifting between dual timelines the author slowly unveils the secrets hidden in the pages, seamlessly weaving together the women’s stories in exciting and unexpected ways。 I was hooked, on the edge of my seat as I desperately waited for her to reveal Nessa and Eliza’s fate。 Nessa, Eliza and Caroline are a trio of unique voices that come together to create the perfect harmony in the narration of this tale。 And while I enjoyed them all, I was definitely most drawn to Nessa and Eliza both as characters and in terms of the story。 For me, Nessa was the character at the centre of it all。。 A solitary soul who is committed to her work, she believes she is empowering women in an era where they were at the mercy of men and their whims or desires。 She has clear rules and standards: only men will ever meet death at the hand of her poisons, never women。 Whatever they may have done。 This dark side of her apothecary is a legacy of the betrayal she suffered at the hands of her lover many years ago, an incident that echoes in every facet of her life and is the reason she casts such a lonely shadow to this day。 Eliza is a young and fairly innocent girl whose desire to learn and please is both her weakness and her strength。 She is fascinated by what Nessa does and refuses to heed the older woman’s warnings about not shouldering the same burden she has all these years。 Like Nessa I found myself feeling very maternal towards Eliza and had a real soft spot for her。 What I liked most about Caroline was the journey of self discovery she took。 When we first meet her she’s lost, feeling like her world has been turned upside down, and has no idea what she wants or what her future holds。 After discovering the vial her passion for history is reignited and she finally allows her inner historian to resurface after suppressing her for all those years。 She begins to see how stifled she has been and wonders if it might be time for a new dream and direction in life。 That passion and her determination to solve the mystery of the vial was intoxicating and I enjoyed the friendship it kindled between her and Gaynor。 Atmospheric, haunting, immersive and brimming with menace, this is a remarkable debut that I highly recommend。 I am excited to see what comes next from this talented author and will be first in line to read it upon its release。 。。。more

I just。。。 didn't like Caroline。 Which kind of ruins the whole thing because the whole story focuses on her development。 I appreciate that she became all I don't need no man by the end。 But like。。 you didn't work toward any goals of your own for TEN YEARS besides getting married and waiting for a baby, and then you realize that you're unfulfilled。 well duhBy the end, she's just so brave because (view spoiler)[she leaves her dick of a husband and applies to Grad school。 (hide spoiler)]I get I just。。。 didn't like Caroline。 Which kind of ruins the whole thing because the whole story focuses on her development。 I appreciate that she became all I don't need no man by the end。 But like。。 you didn't work toward any goals of your own for TEN YEARS besides getting married and waiting for a baby, and then you realize that you're unfulfilled。 well duhBy the end, she's just so brave because (view spoiler)[she leaves her dick of a husband and applies to Grad school。 (hide spoiler)]I get that that is a difficult decision but COME ON。 This novel is obviously supposed to be about female empowerment but is Caroline really the best that we can get???Nella was cool though。 The novel should have focused more on her timeline。 。。。more

This was enjoyable。 I would have liked it much better when I was 12 or 13 years old。 It’s an easy read and has a decent amount of suspense。 It’s a great “girl power” read。

I think my expectations were too high for this since it was so highly anticipated。 I found the present day narrative boring and predictable。 Honestly, the whole book would have been better if it was all the narratives from the late 1700's。 I think my expectations were too high for this since it was so highly anticipated。 I found the present day narrative boring and predictable。 Honestly, the whole book would have been better if it was all the narratives from the late 1700's。 。。。more

Fitting that I’m reading this during Women’s History Month! A nice piece of historical fiction。 Two women, two points in time, tied together by secrets and deceit。 Found the historical element to be captivating with its descriptions of Nella’s shop, customers and the London setting。 The present day POV was a bit lacking, especially near the end of the book。 The conflict that arises was surprising but the resolution was far too quick and simple。 Overall, found it an easy and enjoyable read。

A fantastic debut novel from Sarah Penner。 Not to be cliche but I could not put this book down。 Unfortunately work and daily life only allow that I finish in a mere 3 days。 The story starts in Ohio and lands in the United Kingdom。 A husbands infidelity paired with unfulfilled desires to seek out a life only dreamed of。 The kinship felt between women and the revenge that backfires on many levels。 No spoilers。 Especially dear to my heart with a character that bears my maiden name。 I absolutely lov A fantastic debut novel from Sarah Penner。 Not to be cliche but I could not put this book down。 Unfortunately work and daily life only allow that I finish in a mere 3 days。 The story starts in Ohio and lands in the United Kingdom。 A husbands infidelity paired with unfulfilled desires to seek out a life only dreamed of。 The kinship felt between women and the revenge that backfires on many levels。 No spoilers。 Especially dear to my heart with a character that bears my maiden name。 I absolutely loved this book。 I can’t wait to see what else Sarah Penner pens in the future。 😍 。。。more

I really thought I would adore this book from the story line and the hype。 I liked it just fine, but I enjoyed the historical story line much more than the present day one, and found myself paging through to see when I would finish with Carolines part so I could get back to Nella and Eliza。 A great Debut novel and definitely worth a read, just not a 5 star for me as I was hoping it would be。

A captivating tale of an apothecary in 1700s London who after tragedy in her own life, turns to concocting poisons。 The story alternates between this timeline and present day where a history buff finds a link to this apothecary in the Thames。

I enjoyed this historical-fantasy-mystery-fiction of an uncategorizeable book。 It’s main characters are both current and historical females, and their stories intersect as the current character works to solve the mystery of the historical women。 I was much more drawn to the historical story and feel this could have been an even better book without the current connection。 Nevertheless, it was fun to read and I’m looking forward to future books from this new author。

Over the past several years I have completely fallen for the historical fiction genre。 So many of them use the dual time period device。 I thought it was clever in the beginning but it's starting to get old。 My biggest problem with the device is that I rarely enjoy both stories。 It is usually the historical story that I prefer。 The Lost Apothecary is no different。 I really enjoyed the story that took place in 1791。 Nella, the apothecary, is a wronged woman who becomes the avenger of all other wro Over the past several years I have completely fallen for the historical fiction genre。 So many of them use the dual time period device。 I thought it was clever in the beginning but it's starting to get old。 My biggest problem with the device is that I rarely enjoy both stories。 It is usually the historical story that I prefer。 The Lost Apothecary is no different。 I really enjoyed the story that took place in 1791。 Nella, the apothecary, is a wronged woman who becomes the avenger of all other wronged women。 Quite a liberated point of view in a time when women were expected to accept whatever men did to them。 In the current time period the author tries to draw a common thread between Nella and Caroline, who is vacationing in London and finds an apothecary bottle that was once used by Nella。 The current story isn't bad, but a bit predictable。 All in all, a book worth reading。 As a current day pharmacist, I loved reading about the practice of the field over 200 years ago, despite the fact that in this case the practice was used for harm - something we are sworn never to do。 。。。more
